Movie Review: Avatar

When his brother is killed in a robbery, paraplegic Marine Jake Sully decides to take his place in a mission on the distant world of Pandora. There he learns of greedy corporate figurehead Parker Selfridge's intentions of driving off the native humanoid "Na'vi" in order to mine for the precious material scattered throughout their rich woodland. In exchange for the spinal surgery that will fix his legs, Jake gathers intel for the cooperating military unit spearheaded by gung-ho Colonel Quaritch, while simultaneously attempting to infiltrate the Na'vi people with the use of an "avatar" identity. While Jake begins to bond with the native tribe and quickly falls in love with the beautiful alien Neytiri, the restless Colonel moves forward with his ruthless extermination tactics, forcing the soldier to take a stand - and fight back in an epic battle for the fate of Pandora.

Ever since everyone was talking about how good Avatar was, I wanted to see it. I wondered if it was really that good.
Today I finally got to watch it and I've got to say...I was a little bit disappointed. I have to admit though, it was an excellent movie and it's worth the watch, but I guess it was so overly hyped that I thought that this movie would rule every movie ever created. It was basically like Pocahontas in the future and more "epic". Jake being John Smith and Neytiri being Pocahontas.
Let's look at the positive points of this movie. Everyone said that the special effects were amazing and I have to agree; they were pretty amazing. The epic battle near the end was probably my favourite scene. The acting done was some what good. There were some funny parts to the movie, which I didn't really expect. I liked how the Na'vi people could connect to the forest, animals and spirits. I liked the theme(s)/message(s) in the movie even if it's been done so many times. (i.e, racism, first nations vs. white, ect.) There were many parts to the movie that made it some what unique.
Now the negative things about it. The plot was very predictable. Not a crime though because most movies are pretty predictable. The story line is really nothing new. Guy goes to another planet, finds a new species, be friends them, girl falls in love with guy (and vise versa), bad guys come in, he tries to protect them, the people think that he's betraying him, earns back trust..ect ect ect. Like I said before, it reminded me a lot of Pocahontas.

Nevertheless, James Cameron has really out done himself; replacing his old movie, Titanic, with his new movie, Avatar, as #1 on the box office. I've gotta give props to James Cameron. Titanic, Terminator and now Avatar? You're making big bucks my friend. Big bucks. This guy is definitely a legend in the movie making business.
I actually recommend you go watch Avatar for yourself. Go check it out. ;)
